In Memoriam 1946-2008
Charles A. Pifer
A life long Miamian, born August 27th, 1946 in Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital. Peacefully passed away in his sleep on Saturday, April 12th, 2008, Mr. Pifer was a dedicated and beloved employee at International Links Miami, Melreese Golf Course for 38 years. After completing his service in the U.S. Army stationed in Turkey and Fort Carson, Colorado, Mr. Pifer was hired as a Ranger and Starter in 1970. In 1980, he became the Head Golf Professional at Melreese Golf Course and in 1990 attained Class A status as a member of the PGA.
Prior to becoming the Head Golf Professional, Mr. Pifer excelled as an amateur golfer having qualified for the United States Amateur Public Links Championship in 1972, 1973, and 1978. In 1980 Charlie became the Vice President of the Dade Amateur Golf Association and was in charge of Tournament Operations and Championships including the Dade Amateur and the prestigious internationally reknown, Doral Publix Junior Golf Classic, which he helped grow into the largest junior golf tournament in the world. In 2003, he took on the additional duties as Vice President for The First Tee Miami-Dade Amateur Golf Association.
Charlie will forever be remembered as he touched the lives of generations and generations of golfers. He will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege of working, for him, with him, or those who were lucky enough to call him a friend. He was one of a kind and most certainly irreplaceable for he unconditionally devoted himself and his life to enhance junior golf and the lives of others.
Charlie Pifer is survived by his significant other, Nancy Sherding, whom he affectionately called “Tubby,” and his step mother Marie, sister Linda Pifer Dean, nieces Janet and Cindy and miniature dachsund Heidi.
